Chickens, Cows and Cats
Chickens go cluck, cluck
Cows like going moo, moo, moo

And cats just go meow.

Year Five Retreat

Retreat

On 31st October all the year fives from Good Shepherd School went to the St Francis Retreat Centre to learn more about God. We started off with a prayer and lit small candles. Then we got into pairs and played the leaf game. I was with Sophie and we had to find the right tree that matches it's leaves. We had morning tea and then did a fun scavenger hunt around the garden. We had to stick together until we finished. We had lunch and played around for a bit until we had to go back to school. Everyone had such a fun time thanks to St Francis Retreat Centre! All 3 of us were shaking when listening to the younger kids present their speeches. When it was my turn they announced my speech topic was about me being vertically challenged. It was so much fun and I ended up coming 2nd from my year group. Miranda came first and Mia was our overall winner. I had so much fun. Here are some pictures.

St Mary Mackillop's feast day

St. Mary Mackillop

A celebration for Good Shepherd School in Week 3 was the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.  St Mary MacKillop a vital part of Good Shepherd School, this is because she was the founder of the Josephites aka the Brown Joes.  The Brown Joes travelled all over Australia and New Zealand helping the poor and those in need. They built schools and that is how we are all students at Good Shepherd School. We celebrated the Feast day by going to a Mass for St Mary of the Cross and also having fun with our buddy class Room 4 as we worked on a St Mary MacKillop Art project.

Cook Island Week

Cook Islands

Week 3 has been a very busy week with so many celebrations. Good Shepherd School celebrates our multicultural school with our Cook Island Language focus.  We looked at the culture through our reading and made fun fact files. We were also lucky to have Alessandra and the cultural leaders teach us a Pure (prayer) to sing.

We learnt Aro’a mai te Atua iaku.  See if you can sing this pure too.

Aro’a mai te Atua iaku.
Aro’a mai te Atua iaku
I te au mea taku kite nei
Te anuanua kua iti mai ki roto iaku
Aro’a mai te Atua iaku

My God loves me
My God loves me
And all the wonders I see
The rainbow shines through my window

My God loves me

Babysitting Eggs

Eggsitting

Last week we learnt how to be responsible by having homework which was egg-sitting. This was all part of the 'Keeping ourselves safe' program. The instructions were to take care an egg as if it was a baby. We could not break it so, we all made our eggs a little house to prevent it from breaking. When we were at school we had to put the egg in daycare (on a table) and when we were at home we had fun with the egg. This was such an egg-citing challenge and luckily I didn't crack my egg like some people.
Here is a photo of me with my egg.

The Water Cycle

The Water Cycle
I am learning to inform my audience through an explanation
By: Jiwoo

When you take a nice long shower do you ever stop to think where all this water comes from? Well water has been on Earth for billions of years thanks to an amazing thing called the water cycle. A cycle is a set of steps that repeat over and over again. The water cycle can recycle water! There are three main parts of the water cycle which is precipitation, evaporation and condensation! Without even one of these steps the whole cycle wouldn't work! Starting off with precipitation.

Precipitation is when water droplets fall from the sky in the form of rain, snow, sleet or hail. The temperature of the air tells us what form of water it will take. Water that falls straight into lakes or rivers is called streamflow. When the water falls into a lake or a river, it will soon turn up in the ocean. Rain that fall onto the dry ground is called surface runoff. The water underneath the ground is called groundwater. After all that happens it is time for evaporation to take place.
Evaporation is when water from the ocean turns into a really strange substance called water vapour. The heat of the sun can turn water from the ocean into water vapour which is a type of gas. When you see a boiling kettle and all that gray stuff comes out do you think thats gas? Do you think you can see gas? Well gas is invisible so the thing you are seeing is actually is steam. Water vapour goes up into the sky to make a cloud. When all that is finished it is condensations turn.

Condensation is the process when water vapour cools down and turns into water again. The water then starts to form clouds which causes the cloud to get bigger and heavier. As the cloud turns grey it starts getting full of water and… Water droplets fall from it! Let me tell you something really cool we started off with water droplets falling from the sky and here we are now, water droplets!

In conclusion water we use everyday gets recycled by something called the water cycle and the three main parts of it is precipitation known as rain, evaporation known as water vapour and condensation known as clouds. The water cycle has the responsibility to recycle water but, we have the responsibility to stop wasting water.

Good Shepherd School had been busy training for cross country this term and finally the day arrived.  In week 6 we all arrived at school in our running gear and had our house colours painted onto us. Watercare

Water, water everywhere! On Friday of week 6, we were lucky to have Sally from Watercare come to teach us more about the water. We did a drama activity and experiments. Firstly we examined the process that water goes through to become drinkable water in our households. Our drama was based on the process that the water goes through to be cleaned. We were the water going through each stage. We had so much fun as we ventured around the school. Once we learnt how water is cleaned we then had to try and clean the dirty water ourselves. We had to create a filter system in partners. My partner was my best friend Maggie. We had to do four different tests for our experiments. We experimented with a range of filters to try and test which filter system was the best. We had lots of fun learning.

Here is some information: In New Zealand, the summer is the most dangerous season of the year. That is because our ozone layer is failing. The only way to stay safe is to be sunsmart. Staying sunsmart is when you know what to do in the sun. Did you know you can get skin cancer if you get burnt too much? We have learnt that staying sunsmart is so important. This is my brochure.
